The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
