In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
