Her Royal Highness's Yearly Yuletide Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will listen to a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The theme of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a message before the concert.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
