Astronaut Reveals Depression Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
