An Expert's One-Hour Party Plan: Simple Hosting for Unexpected Guests
Throughout the holiday time, while there's so much happening which even vivacious individuals might sometimes long for a calm break in the new year, it's all too easy to forget details. I believe I'm not the sole one who has once been surprised back to reality while at my desk by an inquiry from someone asking, "What time should we come over later?" Don't worry; whether you are distracted, and simply inclined toward impromptu invitations, I've got some solutions.
The Golden Rule to Great Parties
Above all, though I cannot stress this enough, if you have been planning for a year or just a quarter-hour, the greatest events are the easiest. What anyone expects is pleasant conversation, something to enjoy, and sufficient nibbles that they do not end up gnawing something on the bus back. Unless you're throwing a lavish ball, no one expects a full bar, gourmet food or musical performances.
The greatest parties tend to be the easiest. However, a concept is useful to cover up the reality you've only put the party together while coming home from work.
Selecting a Theme to Guide The Party Planning
Nevertheless, a theme can be useful to hide the fact you have just thrown the party on while returning from the office. And by theme, I mean such as Christmas. Getting slightly more detailed (Swedish-style festivities, say, featuring spiced drink, spiced punch, fish snacks and flatbreads, Nordic beats selection; alternatively fiesta-style party, including holiday punch, chilled brews and cocktails, along with heaps of tortilla chips, salsa and avocado dip, and Luis Miguel playing) will focus the selection during the inevitable grocery run.
Strategic Purchasing to Support Your Event
At the shops, select one or two beverages (an alcoholic option for drinkers, a non-alcoholic one for some don't want to) and a couple of nibbles that match your concept, and buy a generous amount as possible, instead of stressing over providing a wide selection. Nothing appears more abundant and celebratory as plenty – I would always prefer to enter by a tub stocked with chilled bottles of competitively priced crémant or cava over one glass of swanky bubbly. (Chuck in some bags of cubes, as well; there is never plenty of ice.)
Beverages & Party Beverages Simplified
Should you impress and serve a cocktail, make sure to pre-mix a sizable amount in a pitcher so you aren't left faffing around with preparation while you should be having fun. Once underway, request a close friend or volunteer to monitor it and refill when needed until it's finished. Follow suit with the soft drink; people enjoy to be given a job during gatherings so they may experience the positive vibes.
Regarding punch, whichever formula you go for (you can find plenty via search), avoid any recipe overly sugary – any kids there should have their own drinks – and if it's available, put aromatic bitters close by (refrain from putting any to the bowl as they're unsafe for individuals who do not consume alcohol altogether). Take care with presentation so that the non-alcoholic option doesn't seem like an afterthought; just spend a minute to slice several pieces of fruit to the punch.
Nibbles That Work With Minimal Effort
In my view, I recommend passing on the readymade platters with "party foods" that appear at grocery stores at this time of year; they feel fancy, and often require heating things up (should you go this route, be aware that all guests truly prefers herb bread and/or mini sausages anyway). It's my firm opinion you can't beat two really big dishes with tasty chips (salted is universally liked), plus, provided there are no issues, some of those big and excellent value packets of nuts typically found in the South Asian section at the market, and maybe some olives without stones for colour (try not to discover stones around the house months later).
In case, like my mum, you don't consider crisps real food, one sizeable chunk of quality cheese on a board alongside crackers and some beautifully placed fruit often appears painterly. A plate featuring preserved or ready-to-eat meats or fish arranged there (a single variety, except if money is no object), or a nice ready-made pie, of the type that appear on deli counters seasonally, proves more substantial, and you truly will succeed with rustic chunks of flatbread, since they don't need additional preparation.
