A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
